UPPER WATERFALL ON CANEY BOTTOM   CREEK (3)
Driving Directions: From the intersection of U.S. 64, U.S. 276, and N.C. 280, drive 5.2 miles on U.S. 276 north to F.R. 475 on the left. Turn left, passing the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education in 1.4 miles. In 3.1 miles, reach the parking area for Cove Creek Group Camp on the left and the beginning of F.R. 809 on the right.

Hiking Directions: Hike F.R. 809 for 192 feet and turn right to avoid crossing the creek. Cross the creek on a footbridge and turn right to remain on F.R. 809. In 0.19 mile, a spur trail to a small waterfall on Caney Bottom Creek is on the right. At 0.32 mile from the trailhead, reach the intersection of F.R. 809 and the blue blazed Caney Bottom Trail on the left. Continue on F.R. 809 through the group camp. In 0.11 mile reach the Cove Creek sliding rock on the right. At 0.51 mile from the trailhead, take the path on the left that leads to a footbridge to avoid crossing the creek. In 0.1 mile, F.R. 809 ends. On your left, you will see a bath house for the group camp. Walk to the right of the bath house and pick up the blue blazed Caney Bottom Creek Trail. In 0.11 mile (0.72 mile from the trailhead), cross a footbridge. At 0.88 mile from the trailhead, a side path on the right leads to a poor view of a cascade on Caney Bottom Creek. At 1.12 mile from the trailhead, reach a view of the waterfall on the right. If you would like to make a loop hike, continue past the upper waterfall on Caney Bottom Creek for 0.03 mile to a creek crossing. Continue for 0.27 mile to another creek crossing on a footlog and another creek crossing on another footlog in 0.02 mile more. In 0.44 mile from the waterfall on Caney Bottom Creek (1.56 mile from the trailhead) reach the junction with the yellow blazed Cove Creek Trail straight ahead. Hike 1.54 mile to the side path to Cove Creek Falls on the left. (If you do not wish to see Cove Creek Falls, you may continue straight on the Cove Creek Trail back to the group camp) Take the side path for 0.2 mile to a spur trail that leads to the base of the falls. Continue on the main trail for 0.19 mile to the junction of Caney Bottom Creek Trail on the right. Take the Caney Bottom Creek Trail on the right and hike 0.03 and cross the creek on a footlog, turning right after crossing the creek to remain on the trail. In 0.02 mile, reach another junction of the Caney Bottom Creek Trail on the left. Stay straight. You will exit on the other side of the bath house that you entered on.
